Illustrative mobile paint inspection on a vehicle in Berlin

Inspecting a used car without a test drive: what remains open?

The car is at the seller's location, but a test drive is not currently possible. Establish why before requesting an inspection. The reason affects what information the appointment can provide and what will remain unresolved.

Establish the reason and the conditions first

Ask why a test drive is unavailable. Has the seller declined permission, is the car deregistered or have the driving arrangements not yet been agreed? These situations call for different discussions. Permission to view the car does not in itself settle a test drive.

Before any proposed drive, discuss who may drive, the car's registration and insurance, and the agreed conditions. ADAC recommends recording test-drive conditions and liability in writing. Where prerequisites remain unresolved, do not plan the drive as though it has already been confirmed.

What is accessible while the car is stationary

Within the agreed scope, an inspection can examine visible bodywork and paint observations, accessible engine-bay and interior areas, and available records. Functions and measurements can be checked where the vehicle, permission and access allow. OBD reading also depends on technical access.

The report should show how a finding arose: observed, measured, read diagnostically or only stated by the seller. Limits caused by light, weather or unavailable access matter as well. An inaccessible area cannot consequently be assessed as showing no concern.

Which questions remain without driving

Without a test drive, observations while the car is moving remain unavailable. These include perceived gear-change behaviour, noises during driving, and behaviour while steering or braking. A stationary examination cannot supply those observations.

A fault-memory reading does not answer every question about road behaviour either. Ask for the missing drive to be identified explicitly in the result and discuss which parts of your purchase decision depend on the unavailable observations.

Choose the standard check or Plus appropriately

The standard mobile check does not include a test drive. KFZ Wedding's Mobile car check examines accessible areas at the agreed seller's location and documents the result. No vehicle lift is available there.

Car Check Plus includes a test drive only when permission has been given, the vehicle is registered and the drive can be carried out safely. It also adds inspection time, suitable deeper measurements, a VIN query and personal advice on how the car suits your needs and whether buying it is worthwhile for you. An unavailable drive is recorded as a limitation with Plus too.

Discuss the next check before buying

If driving is needed to address an important question, discuss another appointment with the seller and inspector once the prerequisites have been settled. An agreed workshop examination may suit a question about areas that are difficult to access. Whether the car can be brought there needs to be agreed beforehand.

In your nonbinding enquiry, tell us that a drive is currently unavailable and give the known reason. We discuss scope, timing and any travel charge personally. You can then decide whether the obtainable information is enough for you or whether another step is needed before purchase.

Questions about this decision

Does refusing a test drive prove a defect?

No. Refusal alone does not prove a defect. Ask why and consider which information you will lack without driving. Important unresolved points should be clarified before your purchase decision.

Does an untested point count as passed?

No. Our report separates findings from points that were not inspected or were inaccessible. A drive that did not take place is recorded as a limitation.

Can I choose Plus when driving conditions are uncertain?

Tell us about the missing prerequisites first. With Plus, driving still depends on the stated conditions. Discuss a useful scope for your situation with us before relying on a test drive.
